Molecular analysis of environmental and human isolates of Salmonella typhi
Article Abstract:
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of 13 environmental isolates and 41 human isolates of Salmonella typhi from Santiago, Chile, shows that several genetic variations pf the bacteria exist.Multiple clones of the bacteria coexist with no single clone dominating over the others. The environmental isolates have 10 to 12 varying PFGE patterns and the human isolates have 14 to 19 different PFGE patterns. Of the 8 phage types present in the isolates, 50% are E1 or 46 phage type. The environmental and human isolates of S. typhi have certain common molecular types which suggests a epidemiological link between them.

Algicidal effects of a novel marine Pseudoalteromonas isolate (class Proteobacteria, gamma subdivision) on harmful algal bloom species of the genera Chattonella, Gymnodinium, and Heterosigma
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to determine the taxonomic identity of a yellow-pigmented Pseudoalteromonas strain that was isolated and tested for possible alga-bacterium interactions by using cultures of Gymnodinium catenatum. The new bacteria displayed a chemotactic, swarming behavior that led to localized conditions. Results suggest that certain bacteria could have a critical role in the regulation of the onset and development of harmful algal blooms.

Characterization of Ferroplasma isolates and ferroplasma acidarmanus sp. nov., extreme acidophiles from acid mine drainage and industrial bioleaching environments
Article Abstract:
The genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of four Ferroplasma isolates, which were isolated from different acid bioleaching and acid mine drainage (AMD) environments were determined using the two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE). The results from this study can abet in making an assessment of the biochemical role of Ferroplasma isolates in acid-leaching environments.
