Molecular differentiation of Renibacterium salmoninarum isolates from worldwide locations
Article Abstract:
The polymorphisms of the intergenic spacer region between the 16S and 23S rRNA genes of Renibacterium salmoninarum have been studied. A randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of the genome of R. salmoninarum has also been undertaken. Polymerase chain reactions were used in amplifying the spacer region of 74 isolates while DNA sequence analysis was done on 14 geographically distinct samples. Results revealed that spacer region between both rRNA genes is highly conserved. This finding suggests that only a single copy of the rRNA operon is present in the bacterium.

A gene from Renibacterium salmoninarum encoding a product which shows homology to bacterial zinc-metalloproteases
Article Abstract:
Renibacterium salmoninarum which causes bacterial kidney disease in salmonid fish contains hly gene which produces a hemolytic enzyme. The gene hly has a pl of 5.57 and an estimated molecular mass of 66757 Da and the gene product has 548 amino acids. The nucleotide sequence of hly is similar to that of the bacterial zinc-metalloproteases. Escherichia coli which expresses this gene does not show any protease or lecithinase activity. The enzyme is probably a membrane-active toxin and is active against erythrocytes from other species.

Molecular diversity of Renibacterium salmoninarum isolates determined by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis
Article Abstract:
Although Renibacterium salmoninarum is highly conserved, isolates from Iceland, Japan and Canada show some divergence from the highly conserved SV1 strain. This bacterium affects salmonid fish in wild populations and fisheries.
