Nest placement and mortality: is nest predation a random event in space and time?
Article Abstract:
There is still confusion over whether nest mortality is determined by nest site characteristics and placement or vice versa. Recent research has sought to identify a simple connection between nest placement and predation. If this has been absent, nest predation has been seen as a random or almost random process. If nest predation is random in time and space, there should be no benefit of nesting nonrandomly. However, it is not possible to calculate the true benefit of nesting nonrandomly as some tree species represent a large portion of the trees available but are rarely used for nesting.

Breeding of the Gray-winged Trumpeter in French Guiana
Article Abstract:
In French Guiana, laying in Feb and Mar permits Gray-winged Trumpeters to incubate and feed young during the peak of fruit production in Dec to May. This also coincides with the rainy season. Research among a territorial group of Gray-winged Trumpeters found that at least two individuals alternated incubation, as is the case with White-winged Trumpeters in Peru. Most cavities used by White-winged Trumpeters are protected from rain, but this was not the case with the Gray-winged Trumpeters studied in French Guiana.
