Occurrence of Vibrio alginolyticus in Ligurian coast rock pools (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) and its association with the copepod Tigriopus fulvus (Fisher, 1860)
Article Abstract:
Vibrios and heterotrophic bacteria adhering to the copepod Tigriopus fulvus are studied. Tigriopus fulvus lives in Ligurian coast rock pools (Tyrrhenian sea). Water temperature and salinity have a correlation with heterotrophic bacteria which are always found free in the water and bound to the T. fulvus organisms. Vibrio alginolyticus is found free in the water and bound to T.fulvus surfaces during the warmest months. The presence of V. alginolyticus in the rock pool is influenced mainly by the temperature.

Automated systems for identification of heterotrophic marine bacteria on the basis of their fatty acid composition
Article Abstract:
Neural network computing is an effective method for studying the fatty acid methyl ester content of marine bacteria determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The networks accurately assign strains to their genera including those of Oceanospirillum kriegii. Identification of new strains requires no comparison with known strains. Only 22 fatty acids are necessary for identification and a fatty acid content database is useful for the identification of new marine isolates.

Identification of phytoplankton from flow cytometry data by using radial basis function neural networks
Article Abstract:
Phytoplankton identification using flow cytometry data and radial-basis-function (RBF) neural networks. Discrimination of 34 marine/freshwater phytoplankton taxa was successful using RBF networks trained on 11-parameter analytical flow cytometry (AFC) data from use of the European Optical Plankton Analyser.
