Paternal chloroplast DNA inheritance in Pinus contorta and Pinus banksiana: independence of parental species or cross direction
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted on chloroplast DNA inheritance in Pinus contorta and Pinus banksiana seedlings to determine if the mode of inheritance is consistent in the species' matings. DNA analyses showed that most seedlings inherited chloroplast DNA from the paternal parent. However, one maternal and eight nonparental genotypes were observed in the progeny arrays. They may have been caused by contamination, maternal leakage, parental chimerism or recombination. Results also indicated that chloroplast DNA's parental dominance is independent of genotype, species, source or mating direction.

Inheritance of a gene conditioning blotchy root color in table beet (Beta vulgaris L.)
Article Abstract:
A mutant beet exhibiting irregular sectors of blotchy red and white in its roots was crossed with an inbred nonblotchy lines to investigate the mode of inheritance of the blotchy trait. Results indicate that the blotchy trait is controlled by a single recessive gene denoted as bl in the investigation. The results have important implications in the production of beets suitable for use as alternative coloration in the food industry.
