Physiological and biochemical changes accompanying the loss of mucoidy by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of glucose metabolism in a mucoid strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa growing in ammonia-limited continuous culture with glucose as the carbon source are studied. Findings indicate that P. aeruginosa under these conditions, cannot fully control the rate at which glucose and/or its 'external' pathway metabolites are taken up by the cell and therefore, large quantities of alginate are formed to both counteract the adverse effects of accumulating surplus intracellular metabolites and consume the surplus ATP developed from oxidation of these metabolites.

Agrobacterium radiobacter and related organisms take up fructose via a binding-protein-dependent active-transport system
Article Abstract:
A study shows that a high-affinity, active-transport system is involved in the absorption of fructose in Agrobacterium radiobacter. Absorption of fructose by washed cells of the bacteria, grown in fructose limited continuous culture, is affected by periplasmic fructose-binding protein. The fructose transport is restricted by osmotic shock, unlabelled sugars and the uncoupling agent carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone.

An outer-membrane porin inducible by short-chain amides and urea in the methylotrophic bacterium Methylophilus methylotrophus
Article Abstract:
The fmdC gene which encodes an outer-membrane porin in Methylophilus methylotrophus was characterized. The purification, partial characterization and physiological regulation of the porin expression by short-cahin amides and urea were reported. Results reveal that a mature Fmdc porin is involved in the transport of short-chain amides and urea through the outer membrane of M. methylotropus under very low nitrogen concentration.
