Plasmid-encoded anthranilate synthase (TrpEG) in Buchnera aphidicola from aphids of the family Pemphigidae
Article Abstract:
The molecular structure of trpEG-containing plasmids in Buchnera aphidicola from the aphids Tetraneura caerulescens and Pemphigus spyrothecae has been studied. B. aphidicola is an obligate intracellular symbiont of aphids that are involved in the synthesis of essential amino acids. The trp in Buchnera was made to evolve by a single ancestral transfer of trpEG to a RepA/C-like replicon. Results reveal that Buchnera from T. caerulescens contains a 3-kb plasmid with a single copy of trpEG. The plasmid from P. spyrothecae has a putative origin of replication containing iterons and an open reading frame.

The endosymbiont (Buchnera sp.) of the aphid Diuraphis noxia contains plasmids consisting of trpEG and tandem repeats of trpEG pseudogenes
Article Abstract:
The endosymbionts Buchnera sp. of the aphid Diuraphis noxia have plasmids containing one anthranilate synthase (trpEG) gene sequence and seven tandem repeats of the trpEG pseudogene. The trpEG genes and pseudogenes on the plasmids produce the enzyme necessary for tryptophan synthesis, while the trpEG genes are inactive. The Buchnera species originally have two linkage groups on its chromosome. The evolution of the Buchnera trp genes associated with plasmids and chromosomes are congruent, suggesting that there is absence of genetic exchange among endosymbionts.

Polyamine composition and expression of genes related to polyamine biosynthesis in an aphid endosymbiont, Buchnera
Article Abstract:
Spermidine is the sole polyamine produced by Buchnera sp. This bacterium lives symbiotically in aphids, and the amount of bacterial spermidine is higher in young aphids. Polyamines stabilize DNA, which is important since every bacterial cell has more than 100 copies of the genome.
