Plasmid-mediated mineralization of carbofuran by Sphingomonas sp. strain CF06
Article Abstract:
A bacterial strain (CF06) that mineralized both the carbonyl group and the aromatic ring of the insecticide carbofuran and is able to utilize carbofuran as the only source of carbon and nitrogen was obtained from a soil in Washington state. CF06 was found to be a Sphingomonas sp. which has five plasmids of which some are needed for metabolism of carbofuran. Loss of the plasmids prevented the cured strain to grow on carbofuran as the only source of carbon.

Estimation of the abundance of an uncultured soil bacterial strain by a competitive quantitative PCR method
Article Abstract:
Microbial DNA of strain EA25 was directly isolated from an uncultivated field soil in eastern Washington State, and analyzed by competitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR analysis revealed a significant similarity between the number of DNA copies for EA25, with an estimate of 2.17 x 10(super 8) copies per gram of soil, and the number of DNA copies for Escherichia coli.

Structure and function of methanogens along a short-term restoration chronosequence in the Florida everglades
Article Abstract:
The identification of relationships between soil redevelopment and activity and composition of methanogenic assemblages in hole-in-the-Donut (HID) soils is discussed. Results suggest a general decline in methanogenic activity with restoration age.
