Plasmid transfer between the Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki and tenebrionis in laboratory culture and soil and in lepidopteran and coleopteran larvae
Article Abstract:
A plasmid coding for streptomycin resistance can be transferred under normal environmental conditions. This was documented in a study of plasmid transfer between Bacillus thuringiensis subsp., and lepidopteran insects.

Plasmid transfer between Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis strains in laboratory culture, river water, and dipteran larvae
Article Abstract:
Three separate conditions are studied for plasmid transfer between different strains of the gram-positive bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis, including in vitro, estuarine ecosystems and mosquito larvae. The plasmid transfer rate was found to be greater in broth cultures than in the larvae, which may be due to the bacterial population present in mosquito gut or from the presence of B. thuringiensis spores in mosquitos.

Spatial and temporal analysis of the microbial community in slow sand filters used for treating horticultural irrigation water
Article Abstract:
This article describes a slow sand filter method for the analysis of the spatial and temporal structure of the microbial community in water. Research shows that passage of water through the sand column completely removes the zoospores of Phytophthora cryptogea. The method employs polymerase chain reaction-coupled denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis technique among others.
