Population structure and survival of palila
Article Abstract:
A research study relied on the multiple captures and resightings of the endangered palila from 1987-1993 by 984 individuals to determine the annual survival, age and sex ratios of the species inhabiting Mauna Kea, HI. The palila, or Loxioides bailleui, was found to have a survival ratio that was negatively correlated with yearly changes in the palila's staple food, the green mamane pod. The observed skewed adult sex ratio could be due to the hatching year females' increased emigration or mortality, or the breeding females' increased mortality as a result of greater predation exposure.

Observations on the nesting and breeding behavior of the rock wren
Article Abstract:
The nesting and breeding behavior of six pairs of color-banded rock wrens was observed in Rinconada Canyon, Albuquerque, NM, from Mar. to Aug. 1992. Mist nets were used to capture the birds, which were fitted with identification bands on both legs. Sex was determined by the presence of a brood patch or cloacal protuberance. Mated pairs were found to be territorially established by Mar. 1, and rock wrens were observed to be carrying nesting material after six days. Several other observations during the course of the study are presented.
