Production of a novel extracellular polysaccharide by Lactobacillus sake 0-1 and characterization of the polysaccharide
Article Abstract:
A new exopolysaccharide (EPS) was isolated from Lactobacillus sake 0-1 and characterized. This EPS had a 3:2 molar ratio of glucose to rhamnose and a molecular mass distribution of 6 million Da. Its viscosifying properties were better than that of xanthan gum. The EPS may posses a negatively charged group. The optimal physiological conditions established using batch fermentation yielded 1.4 g of EPS per liter. EPS composition was unaffected by different energy sources.

Chromosome polymorphisms among strains of Hansenula polymorpha (syn. Pichia angusta)
Article Abstract:
The separation of chromosomal DNA from Hansenula polymorpha strains into two to six distinct bands ranging from 650 to 2,200 kb in size is discussed. This involved the utilization of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis modified for contour-clamped homogenous field gel electrophoresis. The polymorphism of the electrophoretic pattern was also demonstrated. The involvement of rDNA-carrying gene chromosomes for chromosomal changes was demonstrated.

Comparative study on the production of guar alpha-galactosidase by Saccharomyces cerevisiae SU50B and Hansenula polymorpha 8/2 in continuous cultures
Article Abstract:
The continuous cultivation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae SU50B and Hansenula polymorpha 8/2 was studied. The strains and their genetic constructs were analyzed by mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography. It was found that the production and secretion of enzymes in H. polymorpha were more complex compared to S. cerevisiae since a two-peaked optimum was assessed.
