Permeabilization of fungal membranes by plant defensins inhibits fungal growth
Article Abstract:
When fungal membranes are made permeable by plant defensins, a family of small, usually basic, peptides, fungal growth is inhibited. It appears that a direct interaction with lipid components of the plasma membrane is not likely for the defensins, but they induce ion fluxes across plasma membranes of living fungal hyphae. An assay based on uptake of SYTOX Green was used to investigate. It appears that cation-resistant permeabilization is binding site-mediated and linked to the main cause of fungal growth inhibition brought on by plant defensins.

Glycine betaine: reserve form of choline in Penicillium fellutanum in low-sulfate medium
Article Abstract:
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis was used in locating an alternative intracellular soluble precursor of choline or choline-O-sulfate that accumulates in Penicillium fellutanum cultured in limiting sulfate. Choline is an important component of membranes and a structural element of some microbial cell wall polymers. NMR results indicate that intracellular glycine betaine is another reserve form of choline but is dependent on the availability of sulfate in the culture medium.
