Reductive dehalogenation of brominated phenolic compounds by microorganisms associated with the marine sponge Aplysina aerophoba
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that sponge-associated microorganisms, growing on organobromine compounds, exhibit distinct 16S rDNA terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns and resemble the delta subgroup of the proteobacteria. The occurrence of reductive dehalogenase gene motifs in these organisms indicate that dehalogenation may be coupled to dehalorespiration.

Vertical transmission of a phylogenetically complex microbial consortium in the viviparous sponge Ircinia felix
Article Abstract:
The bacterial community in adults, larvae and early-stage juveniles of the viviparous Caribbean demosponge Ircinia felix are identified and characterized. The results have indicated that in Ircinia felix, vertical transmission of microorganisms through the larvae is very important for establishing the association of sponge-microbe.

Detection and characterization of dehalogenating microorganism by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting of 16S rRNA in a sulfidogenic, 2-bromophenol-utilizing enrichment
Article Abstract:
Halogenated compounds, which are used as biocides are released into the environment by flame-retardants or disinfectants. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of reverse-transcribed 16S rRNA was used to delineate the roles of 2-bromophenol degrading sulfates reducers.
