Reproductive and mate choice strategies in the hermaphroditic flatworm Echinostoma caproni
Article Abstract:
The evolution of organisms is shaped by their reproductive strategies, which also influence the genetic structure of populations. A study of a new natural population of the hermaphroditic flatworm Echinostama caproni investigates selfing rate and mate choice. The flatworms were maintained in two situations in mice: in double infections where two individuals belong or do not belong to the same isolate, and triple infections where two out of three individuals are from the same isolate. Results in the first experiment correspond with predictions of no difference between intra- and interisolate selfing rate. The second experiment also coincides with the prediction of preferential outcrossing.

High levels of conservation at microsatellite loci among ictalurid catfishes
Article Abstract:
It has been shown that it is feasible to use random amplified polymorphic DNA and amplified fragment length polymorphism markers for linkage analysis using the interspecific hybrid system. It has been possible to isolate and sequence several hundred microsatellite loci from the channel catfish genome. When the microsatellites are conserved between the channel catfish and blue catfish, all types of polymorphic markers can be exploited to develop a unified catfish map. High levels of heterozygosity exist in both channel catfish and the blue catfish.
