Salmonella typhi mutants defective in anaerobic respiration are impaired in their ability to replicate within epithelial cells
Article Abstract:
Research shows that mutant Salmonella typhi bacteria who cannot utilize nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor under anaerobic conditions are also less able to proliferate with HEp-2 epithelial cells. ModC(chlD)::MudJ insertion mutants, MoaA(chlA)::MudJ insertion mutants and mutants unable to use nitrate or fumarate in respiration were grown under laboratory conditions. Their growth rates and invasiveness abilities were compared.

The Salmonella typhi melittin resistance gene pqaB affects intracellular growth in PMA-differentiated U937 cells, polymyxin B resistance and lipopolysaccharide
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze Salmonella typhi invasion and survival using a cell-culture based assay supporting the human monocyte macrophage cell line U937. An S. typhi PhoP- mutant was restricted in net growth in phorbol myristate acetate differentiated U937 cells. Results indicated that effects on lipopolysaccharides may have some influence on differences between S. typhi and S. typhimurium infection of hosts.

A chromosomal region surrounding the ompD porin gene marks a genetic difference between Salmonella typhi and the majority of Salmonella serovars
Article Abstract:
A genetic difference between the majority of Salmonella serovars and Salmonella typhi can be seen in a chromosomal region surrounding the ompD porin gene. The majority of Salmonella serovars most frequently associated with the systemic infection of vertebrate hosts produce the major outer-membrane porin. It appears that the smvA gene is inactive in S typhi. Absence of ompD may suggest a role in host specificity.
