Selection and characterization of microorganisms utilizing thaxtomin A, a phytotoxin produced by Streptomyces scabies
Article Abstract:
The microorganisms which can degrade thaxtomin A, the major phytotoxin produced by Streptomyces scabies, were determined for potential use as biocontrol agents for potato scab. Findings revealed that various microorganisms including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and even fungi can degrade thaxtomin A. The thaxtomin A-degrading fungi were not able to control potato scab. However, all three thaxtomin A-utilizing bacteria were able to protect potato tubers from developing scabs.

Glucanolytic actinomycetes antagonistic to Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi, the causal agent of raspberry root rot
Article Abstract:
Experiments are carried out to evaluate the ability of actinomycetes to produce antifungal metabolites that inhibit the growth of Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi which causes raspberry root rot. Thirteen actinomycetes strains are selected and investigated for their enzymatic properties. Results show that these strains produce beta-1,3-, beta-1,4- and beta-1,6-glucanases which help reduce the root rot index when inoculated on raspberry seedlings.

Relatedness of strains of Xanthomonas fragariae by restriction fragment length polymorphism, DNA-DNA reassociation, and fatty acid analyses
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze association levels of strains of Xanthomonas fragariae collected from Canada and the US. The fatty acid methyl ester profiles and restriction fragment length polymorphisms based on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis were utilized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated that the strains belong to the same species based on the DNA-DNA reassociation values.
