Isolation of a spotted fever group rickettsia, Rickettsia peacockii, in a Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, cell line
Article Abstract:
A cell line created from a Rocky Mountain wood tick was used to culture a rickettsia that was identified as Rickettsia peacockii. This organism seems to protect the tick from infection by Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever in mammals and also kills the tick.

Sequence and expression analysis of the ompA gene of Rickettsia peacockii, an endosymbiont of the Rocky Mountain Wood Tick, Dermacentor andersoni
Article Abstract:
A major rickettsial outer membrane protein gene ompA presumed to be involved in infection and pathogenesis of spotted fever group rickettsiae but not expressed in the symbiont is discussed. Double immunolabeling studies show that action tail structures in tick cells infected with Rickettsia rickettsii strain HIp#2 but not in cells infected with R. peacockii.

Lethal effect of Rickettsia rickettsii on it stick vector (Dermacentor andersoni)
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to gain further insight into the low prevalence of infected ticks by examining the maintenance and cycling of Rickettsia rickettsii. Adult wood ticks were infected with six separate rickettsial strains and the uninfected sibling, uninfected F-0 and naturally infected F-0 ticks were investigated. Results provide evidence of the lethal effect of R. rickettsii on its tick vector Dermacentor andersoni.
