Sequencing bands of ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis fingerprints for characterization and microscale distribution of soil bacterium populations responding to mercury spiking
Article Abstract:
Ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis was used to analyze the enrichment of a microbial soil community when the soil was spiked with mercury. Two strains were identified as part of the response to the spiking: one related to Clostridium-like genera and one related to Ralstonia-like genera.

Comparison of nifH gene pools in soils and soil microenvironments with contrasting properties
Article Abstract:
PCR analysis of the nifH gene in soil bacteria shows a wide diversity of diazotrophic bacteria, depending on the inorganic nitrogen content of the soil. The nifH gene sequences of the dominant species were similar to that of some marine bacteria.

Freshwater bacteria can methylate selenium through the thiopurine methyltransferase pathway
Article Abstract:
Results shows that an aquifer uncontaminated with selenium exhibits emission of methylated selenium derivatives following spiking with selenite or (methyl)seleno cysteine. Sequence analysis of the thiopurine methyltransferase gene (tpm) in bacterial heterotrophs, growing on selenate and selenite, indicate that it shows similarity to other bacterial, viral, rat and human thiopurine methyltransferase sequences by 52 to 71%.
