Simultaneous immunofluorescent detection of coentrapped cells in gel beads
Article Abstract:
Simultaneous immunofluorescent detection is discussed relative to coentrapped cells in gel beads. The method developed involves double color labeling and confocal microscopy. It is fast and sensitive and may be useful for studying cell dynamics in mixed-culture starter production using immobilized cells in gel beads. Microscopic observations correlated exactly with cell counts from use of a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Immobilized cell technology with lactic acid bacteria has been suggested for applications such as ongoing prefermentation of milk for yogurt.

Inactivation of adhesion and invasion of food-borne Listeria monocytogenes by bacteriocin-producing Bifidobacterium strains of human origin
Article Abstract:
A study identified three bacteriocin-producing bifidobacterial isolates from newborns as Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum (two strains) and B. thermophilum (one strain). The aim is to evaluate the ability of these strains to compete with food-borne Listeria monocytogenes for adhesion and invasion sites on Caco-2 and HT-29 cells.

Detection of hepatitis A virus by the nucleic acid sequence-based amplification technique and comparison with reverse transcription-PCR
Article Abstract:
A technique based on nucleic acid sequence-based amplification can detect smaller amounts of hepatitis A virus in food and clinical samples than reverse-transcription PCR. It detected the virus in waste water, lettuce, and blueberries and was not affected by the presence of nontarget RNA or DNA.
