Status and trends of loon populations summering in Alaska, 1971-1993
Article Abstract:
Populations of Pacific, Common, and Yellow-billed Loons (Gavia pacifica, G. immer, G. adamsii) summering in Alaska show no significant difference between 1977 and 1993. Red-throated Loons (G. stellata), however, decreased by 53%. Population indices and densities are given for each species by habitat, including boreal, tundra and combined. The Alaska-Yukon Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey and Arctic Coastal Plain Waterbird Breeding Population Survey are useful for estimation of long-term population trends. Estimates from the surveys show considerable variations over the years. Factors influencing the results of aerial surveys are discussed.

Bald eagles kleptoparasitizing sea otters at Amchitka Island, Alaska
Article Abstract:
A study focused on the kleptoparasitic behavior of bald eagles victimizing sea otters at the Alaskan island of Amchitka. This is the first unequivocal account of bald eagles stealing food from a mammal, which was observed between Jul. 1992 and Mar. 1994 during a study on Enhydra lutris ecology. The bald eagles, or Haliaeetus leucocephalus, were observed stealing lumpsuckers from the sea otters. Several failed attempts by bald eagles were also observed.

Article Abstract:
An annotated list of the occurrence of 74 new avian taxa in Alaska between 1976 and 1991 is given, bringing the total number of occurrence of species in Alaska to 436. The total includes the first documented records in North America of 20 species and eight subspecies of Old World birds.
