Substantial Native American female contribution to the population of Tacuarembo, Uruguay, reveals past episodes of sex-biased gene flow
Article Abstract:
The Native American and the African contribution in the population of Tacuarembo, Uruguay is investigated by analyzing the ancestry of maternal lineages, using the mitochondrial DNA markers of Native American, African and European origins and determining the proportions of each parental group in the population. The study indicates the existence of sex-biased gene flow between European men and Native American women of Uruguay, which is similar to the other Latin American populations.

Population structure and admixture in Cerro Largo, Uruguay, based on blood markers and mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms
Article Abstract:
A study, based on autosomal markers, X-linked marker and mitochondrial polymorphisms, was conducted on samples of Afro-Uruguayans from the capital city of the Department of Cerro Largo, to examine the different amounts of Amerindian and African genetic contributions in the Uruguayan population. Although directional matings between Amerindian women and European men were detected, the differences involving Africans were not significant.

Directional mating and a rapid male population expansion in a hybrid Uruguayan population
Article Abstract:
Four Y-chromosome non-recombinant region markers to characterize the population of Tacuarembo estimate the origin of the male parental contributions, and the historic process that could conduct to its conformation are analyzed. Patrilocality and migration are responsible for the male population of Tacuarembo.
