The extrusion-capture model for chromosome partitioning in bacteria
Article Abstract:
An extrusion-capture model for chromosome partitioning in bacteria is discussed in this review article. The bacterial chromosome has a defined orientation in cells, with individual regions moving during the cell cycle to bring that orientation. Several terminus region-specific mechanisms ensure that, once replicated, the sister terminus regions are separated properly when medial cell division is finished. Other recent findings are covered.

Characterization of a prokaryotic SMC protein involved in chromosome partitioning
Article Abstract:
The protein,Bacillus subtitlis Smc protein, is important for the successful structuring and partitioning of chromosomes. A null mutation of the protein resulted in a temperature-sensitive-lethal phenotype. Abnormal nucloids and anucelate cells were observed. Spo0J, the chromosome partitioning protein, was found to be altered.

Core promoter elements can regulate transcription on a separate chromosome in trans
Article Abstract:
Research supports the role of the TATA box and initiator element in regulating chromosomal transcription. Using a Drosophila yellow gene as a test case, researchers determined that by altering two core promoter elements via gene replacement, the results would provide alleles that could support transvection.
