Tracking the evolution of the elusive Andean mountain cat (Oreailurus jacobita) from mitochondrial DNA
Article Abstract:
Andean mountain cats could have differentiated in either North or South America, possibly by adapting to the drier alpine ecosystems along the Andes while the progenitor to ocelot/margay adapted to the environment in Central America and western South America. Research into the evolutionary associations of the Andean mountain cat has been undertaken by using a molecular genetic approach, sequencing segments from three mitochondrial genes thought to be evolving at a moderate to fast rate in carnivores and thus giving information about distinguishing links between recently derived species.
