Transposable element distributions in Drosophila
Article Abstract:
C Hoogland and C Biemont's analysis of element distributions in Drosophila melanogaster support the mechanisms of selections against mutations and selections against chromosomal rearrangements. However, their conclusions did not have a consistent pattern. In addition, they ignored the shortcomings of the mechanism and several lines of evidence supporting ectopic exchange. The method of analysis used was also flawed. At the same time, they failed to study the power of the Spearman rank correlation tests. Thus, further studies on ectopic exchange should be conducted.

The evolution of duplicate glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase genes in Drosophila
Article Abstract:
The development of genes which encode glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) are analyzed. The genes, GAPDH-43E and GAPDH-13F, determine genetic codes in Drosophila melanogaster. As a subgenus of Drosophila, Drosophila hydei was analyzed for possible linkage at DNA level. Analysis shows that melanogaster GAPDH genes resembled each other more than Hydei's single GAPDH gene. The results support conclusions that the GAPDH gene intron was lost and later duplicated in the Sophophoran lineage.

Germline: transformation of Drosophila virilis mediated by the transposable element hobo
Article Abstract:
Previous studies on germline transformation using a transposable element hobo were conducted only on Drosophila melanogaster. To determine whether transformation can be induced on other insects, a laboratory strain of Drosophila virilis (D. virilis) were transgenically inserted with a hobo vector carrying a miniwhite cassette. Germline transformations among the D. virilis were identifying, suggesting that hobo and other transposable elements can stimulate transformations in other insects.
