Use of rRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization for measuring the activity of single cells in young and established biofilms
Article Abstract:
The in situ measurement of single-cell activity using rRNA fluorescence hybridization and digital microscopy was reported. The relationships among cellular composition, rRNA fluorescence hybridization signal and the growth rate of a sulfate-reducing bacteria were described. Using this technique, cell size and fluorescence intensity both in culture and in multispecies biofilms were quantified. The results indicate that this approach can be used to infer the growth rates of specific populations in microbial communities.

Recurring seasonal dynamics of microbial communities in stream habitats
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the recurring seasonal patterns of microbial distribution and abundance in three third-order temperate streams within the Southeast Pennsylvania Piedmont observed over four years. It was observed that the recovery of sequences related to microbial populations brought about a close association between the headwater streams and their watersheds.

Simultaneous determination of gene expression and bacterial identity in single cells in defined mixtures of pure cultures
Article Abstract:
A new technique has been developed to establish bacterial identity and gene expression in single cells in defined mixtures of pure cultures at the same time. The technique, which involves a chromogenic beta-galactoside activity assay and ribosomal ribonucleic acid hybridization, uses fluorescently labelled oligonucleotide probes and quantifies beta-galactose activity.
