Variable patterns of axonal projections of sensory neurons in the mouse vomeronasal system
Article Abstract:
The dichotomy between the main and accessory olfactory system of mice is also evident at the molecular level. In the main system, odorant receptor genes interact with seven-transmembrane proteins, while in the vomeronasal system, two families of genes interact with the transmembrane proteins. Using gene targeting technology, mutations of the pheromone receptor gene (VR2) are used to demonstrate that VR2 is monallellicaly expressed in a given neuron and that axons in VR2-expressing neurons converge into numerous glomeruli in the accessory olfactory lobe in a pattern that is complex and variable.

Visualizing an olfactory sensory map
Article Abstract:
A genetic method of visualizing axons from olfactory sensory neurons expressing a given odorant receptor, as they project to the olfactory bulb, is introduced. Among the 1800 glomeruli in the mouse olfactory bulb, neurons expressing a specific receptor project to only two topographically fixed loci. These results affirm a model wherein a topographic map of receptor activation encodes odor quality in the olfactory bulb. The olfactory receptor is believed to play an instructive role in the guidance process, but is not the sole determinant in axon targeting.

Axon guidance of mouse olfactory sensory neurons by odorant receptors and the beta2 adrenergic receptor
Article Abstract:
The examination of how the odorant receptors (OR) protein, determining axonal identity, is carried out by using gene targeting in mice is discussed. It is observed that olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) coexpress other ORs function in odorant reception and axonal identity when the OR coding region is deleted.
