windbeutel, a gene required for dorsoventral patterning in Drosophila, encodes a protein that has homologies to vertebrate proteins of the endoplasmic reticulum
Article Abstract:
Molecular analysis of windbeutel, a gene required for dorsoventral patterning in Drosophila, has been carried out and it has been found to encode a putative resident protein of the endoplasmic reticulum. It has homologs in humans and rats and is expressed briefly in the follicle cells of the ovary about at the time when the dorsoventral axis of the egg chamber is set up. It seems to be responsible for the folding and/or modification of a certain factor secreted by the follicle cells. It is likely a participant in activation of the ventralizing signal.

cornichon and the EGF receptor signaling process are necessary for both anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral pattern formation in Drosophila
Article Abstract:
The cornichon (cni) gene is necessary for the epidermal growth factor signals which form the anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral pattern during oogenesis in Drosophila. Studies of cni mutations show that the cni-gurken-torpedo (cni-grk-top) signal in the beginning of oogenesis establishes the anterior and posterior terminal follicle cells. Later during oogenesis the signal for the reorganization of the microtubule network which establishes the dorsal-ventral pattern formation is produced by the cni and grk genes and received by the top receptor.

Localized requirements for windbeutel and pipe reveal a dorsoventral prepattern within the follicular epithelium of the Drosophila ovary
Article Abstract:
The roles of the somatically required dorsal group genes nudel, windbeutel and pipe in the generation of dorsoventral asymmetry within the follicular epithelium of the Drosophila ovary were investigated. A novel follicle cell marker was employed to evaluate the effect of mutant follicle cell clones on the dorsoventral prepattern within the embryo. Results show that there is no spatially localized requirement for nudel activity while windbeutel and pipe are required only within a limited ventral region of the epithelium.
