A Look at Mainstream Diagnostics
Article Abstract:
There are two approaches to network diagnostics: mainstream and side-channel. Whereas mainstream diagnostics is an end-to-end approach that encompasses management of the entire network, side- channel addresses the links within the network. Side-channel diagnostics require stand-alone units for control and analysis, while in a mainstream system the diagnostic functions are handled by the central computer. Another difference between the two systems is that while a mainstream system constantly monitors the phone lines, the modems at each end of the line, the front-end processor, and the data terminal equipment, a side-channel system provides complete information only about the phone line and the modems at the central location when the telephone is operating at normal specification. With its endorsement by IBM and NCR mainstream diagnostics have become the de-facto standard. A diagram illustrating mainstream and side-channel diagnostics is included.
