U.S. PC shipments grew 14% to 15% in quarter, despite a projected slump
Article Abstract:
PC sales in the US increased approximately 15% during 1st qtr 1996, close to what analysts had predicted a year earlier for the period but a significant increase over the expected results after a very slow 4th qtr 1995. Compaq, HP and Gateway 2000 each posted substantial gains in unit sales and shipments, while IBM and Apple continued declines that seriously threaten their standing in the marketplace. HP's 132% growth level is sufficient to transform the company from seventh place to third in the market, surpassing Apple in that role. Analysts credit especially strong sales in March and the latter part of February for much of the unexpected gains, but the pessimistic sales forecasts predicted by the analysts appear to be largely overstated.
