A cost-based methodology for stochastic line balancing with intermittent line stoppages
Article Abstract:
An evaluation is made of the effect of stochastic operation times on the combined operating expenses of the constantly paced production line based on the theory that the line is halted when a minimum of one work station requires greater time than allotted. An all-purpose stochastic cost function is integrated with the effective balancing algorithm to allow the generation of a roughly minimal cost balance. Cost savings produced by the stochastic technique are compared to the two deterministic techniques.

Safety stocks in MRP - systems with emergency setups for components
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) or Materials Requirements Planning systems were previously designed for the deterministic environment. Usually, demand for finished goods is not certain and some kind of buffering mechanism is needed to provide the proper service levels. Once the schedule is revised for each period, demand variability can manifest itself through emergency or early production runs. Many of the emergency runs can be prevented through the use of safety stocks.
