America Online offers free Internet use in Britain
Article Abstract:
America Online and Bertelsmann AG, through their joint venture AOL Europe, have begun offering free Internet access service in Great Britain. The service, Netscape Online, was set up to compete against another British subscription-free online service Freeserve PLC, as well as other "free" World Wide Web services available. Unlike U.S.-based online services that charge monthly fees, European Internet companies receive revenue from telephone companies, which charge for all local calls, as well as income from e-commerce and online advertising. Some analysts believe AOL may wind up competing against itself and its content-heavy AOL UK and Compuserve fee-based subscription services while British phone companies are considering offering Internet users flat-rate pricing and quicker connections.
