A great CD-ROM that does justice to viewing great art
Article Abstract:
Corbis Publishing introduces the $45 A Passion for Art CD-ROM collection of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings from the private collection of the late Dr Albert C. Barnes. The disk will be available in a Windows and Macintosh version. Barnes created an impressive collection of paintings from masters including Matisse, Cezanne and Renoir. When the innovative collection was harshly criticized, Barnes closed the collection from casual viewers. The CD-ROM contains images of over 300 of the collection's paintings, arranged to replicate the rooms of the Foundation building that houses the collection. When a paining is clicked on by the mouse, a more expansive view is provided with text and sometimes audio commentary. Details can be viewed by zooming in with the mouse. The application offers four different tours covering different aspects of the collection. It allows the user to create slide shows, view painting by artist or study the paintings chronologically.

New programs fail to make designing Web pages truly easy
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's $79 Publisher 97 now includes an easy-to-use Web design module that uses templates and wizards to help novice Web page designers setup Web pages, while Claris Corp's $99 Claris Home Page is not easy to use for inexperienced Web page designers. Microsoft Publisher 97 is a desktop publishing application that now includes a Web page designer. Publisher, therefore, treats Web page design as another aspect of desktop publishing. The program includes a variety of helpful templates, and its wizards make Web page design easy and straightforward. The application includes a Web page design checker that looks for mistakes such as overlapping graphics. Publisher 97's Web page design module does have some glaring technical flaws. Claris Home Page is not easy to use because it does not include wizards nor templates. The program's command lines can be as difficult to learn as HTML.
