The Small Business Assn (SBA) is considering making two significant changes to the General Business Guaranty loan program. It wants to reduce loan guarantees from 81% to 75% and impose a fee on investors who buy the loans. The changes will make it harder for small businesses to obtain credit.

Salvaging a benefit from bad debts

Bad debts can cripple the finances of a small business. Bad business debts are deductible in the year in which they are incurred. Efforts to collect the debt must be implemented to show the IRS that the debt is indeed worthless and can be written off.
