AOL net soars to $68 million, beats forecasts
Article Abstract:
America Online (AOL) says earnings for the 1st qtr, ended Sep 30, 1998, more than tripled, increasing to $68 million, or 26 cents a diluted share. The better-than-expected results compare with $19.2 million, or eight cents a diluted share, in the same period last year. Revenue is up 65 percent, to $858.1 million from $521.6 million. The company has also declared a two-for-one stock split. AOL's membership continues to grow: membership was 13.5 million at the quarter's end, up 900,000 compared with the previous quarter and up four million compared with last year. In spite of all the good news, problems loom on the company's horizon. For example, telephone companies and cable operations are entering the Internet industry. High-speed Internet access enabled via cable modems and digital telephone lines could represent ormidable competition.

Article Abstract:
Unlike rivals Palm Inc. and Handspring Inc., Waterloo, Ontario-based Research in Motion Ltd. posted profit and revenue gains and plans similar strength in the second half of the year. Its success during the slowdown may be due to the fact that its wireless hand-held BlackBerry device and service is marketed to corporate customers rather than the retail market. Net income was $3.8 million.
