AT&T, Lockheed plan to co-market intelligent vehicle highway systems
Article Abstract:
AT&T and Lockheed Corp are teaming up to market intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS) to state and local transportation administrations worldwide. IVHS is structured around AT&T's smart card technology, a credit card-sized device that can store and retrieve all kinds of information. IVHS would enable motorists to pay tolls without stopping the car, and to receive information regarding road and traffic conditions while driving. California, Arizona and Texas have definite plans to establish high-tech roadways in the future, and Louisiana and Oklahoma have already installed automatic toll collection systems. The market for these systems is expected to reach $5 billion by 1997, and $200 billion by the year 2012. AT&T already has partnerships with companies in Japan, Italy and Canada for IVHS. Meanwhile, Lockheed is looking for new direction as defense contracts dwindle in number.

MCI dials up new connection for collect calls
Article Abstract:
MCI Communications Corp rolls out an advertising campaign aimed at grabbing a bigger share of the market for collect calls, which generate $3 billion in annual revenue on 1 billion calls. MCI currently handles only about 11 percent of collect calls, compared to 75 percent for AT and T and 5 percent for Sprint Corp. MCI says customers can realize significant savings by dialing 1-800-COLLECT instead of 'O' for operator. An AT and T spokesman says customers are willing to pay more for the experience of its operators, while a Sprint spokeswoman says Sprint's FON charge card is as easy to use and costs about as much as MCI's service. An analyst applauds MCI for once again illustrating its marketing savvy. The 1-800-COLLECT campaign does not mention MCI.
