AT&T is shopping for firms involved in advanced communications services
Article Abstract:
AT and T says that its growth strategy includes the acquisition of companies in the advanced communications market, including cellular radio and other wireless systems. AT and T is trying to change its image as a company that simply dominates market share to one that is growing in a wide variety of areas. Industry observers note that the telephone company has a particular advantage overseas where it can deliver sophisticated products at lower cost than competitors. AT and T's financial goals include an annual growth of 10 percent between 1991 and 2001. The company also wants 50 percent of its revenues to come from overseas. The acquisition of NCR was central to this strategy; AT and T briefly considered a bid for Apple Computer, but rejected it on the basis of too great a distance between the two firms' corporate cultures. Digital Equipment Corp and Hewlett-Packard were also rejected, DEC because it was headed for restructuring and HP because its range of businesses was too diverse.

BellSouth, RAM to start network for data service
Article Abstract:
BellSouth Corp's BellSouth Enterprises unit and RAM Broadcasting Corp will jointly set up a mobile data transmission service that will compete with the Ardis data service network of IBM and Motorola Inc. The new network, into which BellSouth is investing $300 million, will provide data transmission for vehicle dispatching, order entry and package delivery. Unlike Ardis which requires the use of Motorola terminals, the BellSouth-RAM network will be public and will offer transmission only, thereby allowing manufacturers to build devices that can communicate over it. BellSouth warns that its 1992 earnings will go down by four percent because of the investment. BellSouth's money will be used to set up RAM's US and UK mobile data network.
