AT&T mirrors MCI's service for collect calls
Article Abstract:
AT and T is offering a new collect-call service that is similar to rival MCI Corp's 1-800-COLLECT service. AT and T's 1-800-OPERATOR reduces standard collect-calling rates by 10 to 15 percent, depending on the call's duration and when the call is made. There are an estimated 1.2 billion collect calls being made a year, which translates to about $3 billion in revenue. Approximately 75 percent of the collect-call business belongs to AT and T, and five to seven percent to MCI. MCI launched its 1-800-COLLECT program in May 1993 in an attempt to win more of the market. In addition to its new service, AT and T is providing a new promotion at 10 US airports to reduce by 30 percent charges on calls from public pay phones that are hooked up to non-AT and T long-distance carriers.

AT&T plays a new card in its strategy
Article Abstract:
AT&T introduces its Universal Card, in the phone company's latest move into financial services. AT&T already has a start in financial services with AT&T Capital Corp, one of the top 10 equipment leasing and financing companies in the US. Income for AT&T Credit was $42 million for 1989 on revenue of $442 million. Despite its success at the perimeter of the industry and despite a recognized name, analysts foresee a difficult time ahead for the AT&T Universal Card. The Universal card is actually two cards in one: it is a credit cardwith an interest rate of 18.9 percent; and it is a calling card that offers a 10 percent discount on long distance services. AT&T promises no annual fee for life to customers who sign up for the card during its first year.
