MCI licenses Canadian carriers to use its network technology
Article Abstract:
MCI Communications Corp licenses communication technology to Stentor, a Canadian telecommunications company that is a joint venture of several major telephone service providers, including Bell Canada. Stentor will pay $150 million to MCI during 1993 for the technology, which includes software that was developed by MCI. The agreement will give MCI access to the Canadian market as consumers make calls that terminate on MCI lines in the US. MCI sees the agreement as part of an overall strategy to build partnerships with major telephone service providers outside the US. MCI has negotiated a similar agreement with British Telecommunications PLC in the UK. While competitors AT&T and Sprint Corp say that they do not anticipate any lost business as a result of the MCI-Stentor agreement, some industry analysts say that they lost a significant opportunity to increase their market share.

AT&T earnings increased by 17% in first quarter; long-distance growth seen leading to strong profits during second half of '92
Article Abstract:
AT&T reports strong profits for the 1st qtr of 1992. The company earned $883 million in the 1st qtr, up 17 percent from $758 million for the same period in the previous year. Revenue is reported at $15.38 billion, up from $15.27 billion. The figures include business from NCR Corp, which AT&T acquired in Sep 1991. While the financial reports signal a possible recovery from the effects of the recession, AT&T faces increased competition from MCI Communications Corp. Both AT&T and MCI Communications are engaged in a discounting program offering small business customers lower-rate service. AT&T is also facing increased friction with its largest union, the Communications Workers of America.
