AT&T picks GE for $250 million satellites job
Article Abstract:
General Electric Co will build AT and T's new communication satellites at a cost estimated at $250 million. Capital Cities/ABC Inc has already agreed to purchase nine transponders on the two new satellites. Television stations usually lease the transponders, and neither company would divulge either terms of the sale or the reason for the purchase. The new satellites, which will be launched in 1993 and 1994, will each contain 24 C-band and 20 Ku-band transponders. The latter frequency is popular with businesses, and AT and T is consciously entering the business communication market with the purchase of the Telstar 4 satellites. The satellites can vary power, providing services such as direct broadcast television that have not been successful previously. Each satellite will last 12 years, and AT and T will probably purchase a third Telstar 4 soon.

BellSouth, LIN agree to merge cellular lines; spinoff, dividend planned; pact may spur McCaw to raise its bid for LIN
Article Abstract:
BellSouth Corp and LIN Broadcasting Corp will merge their properties into what will become the US cellular industry's second largest concern. The merger is still in the planning stages, however, and may provide the impetus for McCaw Cellular Communications Inc to up its bid of $110 a share for LIN stock. McCaw the largest cellular company, currently owns 10 percent of LIN. If the BellSouth/LIN merger does go through, LIN shareholders would own 50 percent of the new company in addition to ownership of the spinoff of LIN's television broadcasting subsidiaries, which includes a $20 per share cash dividend. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and the approval of federal Judge Harold Greene, a process that could take up to a year.
