AT&T sets stake in Canada's Unitel
Article Abstract:
AT and T is scheduled to announce that it has purchased a 20 percent stake in Unitel Communications Inc, Canada's upstart long-distance carrier. AT and T is also considering investing as much as $250 million in Unitel and contributing management expertise. Unitel, which is owned by Rogers Communications Inc and Canadian Pacific Lt, could pose the same sort of threat to Canada's established long-distance network that MCI Communications Corp poses to AT and T in the United States. The Unitel investment is also seen as a counterattack to MCI's exclusive technology and marketing agreement with Stentor, the long-distance consortium owned by Canada's biggest telephone companies. The Unitel pact also will help AT and T begin to move its long-distance services overseas.

AT&T begins to set up fund for NCR offer; computer company starts to map possible defense against $6.12 billion bid
Article Abstract:
AT and T assembles financing for its $90-a-share cash offer for NCR Corp, and the computer company plans a defense against the $6.12 billion acquisition attempt. NCR's board of directors tries to discourage AT and T's bid, threatening to resign, lobbying in Washington, and stirring up employees. Most analysts believe NCR will be unsuccessful and will agree to sell at a higher price. Investors apparently believe that AT and T will succeed at an offer higher than the $90 a share it made on Dec 3, 1990, which drives NCR's stock up $6.125 a share on Dec 8, 1990, to close at $92.75 a share.
