AT&T is seen in a global joint venture; would be a partner with British Telecom
Article Abstract:
AT&T and British Telecommunications are nearing a multinational joint venture that would target business customers, according to executive insiders. The partnership, representing possibly the largest international telecommunications venture, could be unveiled as early as Jul 26, 1998. Financial specifics were unavailable, but the insiders said both giants likely would contribute heavily to a new business whose revenue could reach hundreds of millions of dollars. AT&T Chmn C. Michael Armstrong is adopting a new international strategy in his goal to strengthen the company's mobility. The largest US long-distance carrier traditionally has avoided investing heavily in foreign affiliates, choosing instead to reach loose cooperative agreements with more than 12 overseas carriers. British Telecom, the largest British communications company, failed recently in an effort to merge with MCI.
