All ahead slow as cable companies enter cyberspace
Article Abstract:
The cable TV industry is finally making its first forays into the Internet access market, following two years of delays. Cable companies are moving slowly as they enter this market. There have been extensive delays in the development of the special modems needed for this service and the companies do not want to develop a huge demand for services they cannot provide. They will also face more competition in this market than they originally thought. The regional Bell operating companies (RBOC) are marketing new telephone line services that provide high-speed access to the Internet. The coaxial cable used by the cable companies will actually provide much faster service than these special phone lines, and they are 800 times faster than traditional copper lines. ISDN lines are more expensive to install than coaxial cable, and they are slower. It will be at least two years before a cable modem standard is established so, in the interim, cable companies are leasing the modems on a monthly basis.

Baby Bells' TV developers are on hold and frustrated

Tele-TV, a joint venture of Pacific Telesis Group, Nynex Corp and Bell Atlantic, continues to experience difficulties in rolling out its projected cable television service. The three phone companies originally planned to offer interactive and cable programming via high-capacity network switches and fiber optic cabling. The goal was set at delivering the service to 30 million homes in six of the largest telecommunications markets by the end of the century. Financial and technical considerations have caused a downgrading of this target to two million homes by the year 2002. Further, Tele-TV has now embraced wireless network technology as an economical alternative to infrastructural upgrading. Negotiations are in progress to allow the new cable alternative to offer a range of cable programming.
