Ambitious start for a computer research group
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp co-founder Paul Allen and IBM Corp former vice president David Liddle have formed the Interval Research Corp to study high technology problems and techniques for the computer industry in a non-commercial atmosphere. Interval will have the freedom to research creatively and involve university and corporate laboratories in its studies. The focus of Interval's research will be on technology that is unlikely to have commercial value until the millenium. Interval should attract world-class researchers to its facility, which is modeling itself on the Xerox PARC laboratory while working to avoid PARC's difficulty in finding commercial applications for its research. Since Interval's commercial vision is broad-based, it is counting on revenue from licensing its technological developments or helping startup companies.

IBM and Rogers to study better transfer of data
Article Abstract:
IBM and Rogers Communications Ltd's Rogers Cable TV Ltd unit announce that they are cooperating on a study of how to improve the communications technology available to business and private individuals at home. Industry observers note that IBM's interest in conducting research with Rogers, which is the largest provider of cable television in Canada, is because Rogers has been quick to convert its systems to fiber optics, which is an important technology for improving transmission speeds of data. The study will initially focus on business since business has more installed fiber optic technology. The study will also investigate ways in which copper wiring in homes can be improved to provide faster data transfer rates.
