America Online agrees to licensing pact with Netscape, join marketing efforts
Article Abstract:
Netscape Communications and America Online (AOL) agree to a licensing agreement that will provide Netscape's Navigator Web browser to AOL's five million subscribers. The agreement further calls for the two companies to each promote the other's products and services on their online services. AOL's pact with Netscape comes despite intense lobbying efforts from Microsoft to persuade the world's largest online service to offer Microsoft's Internet Explorer software. Netscape presently controls approximately 85% of the Web browser market, but Microsoft is attempting absorb market share by offering server software at extremely reduced prices. The pact is non-exclusive, and Microsoft and AOL are still free to agree to their own deal, but Netscape's acumen for negotiating is challenging Microsoft's software dominance.

Netscape agrees to broad licensing pact with CompuServe in a blow to Microsoft
Article Abstract:
Netscape Communications agrees to a wide-ranging marketing and licensing contract with CompuServe, inflicting a rare marketing loss on Microsoft, which had worked to quash formation of the deal. Under terms of the agreement, CompuServe will license Netscape's popular Navigator Internet software for distribution among its four million online subscribers. The agreement comes amid marketing attacks from Microsoft against its primary software rival for the Internet market, including Microsoft's attempted derailment of a licensing agreement with America Online (AOL). Netscape will gain improved access to CompuServe's international distribution channel and large number of subscribers. Both Microsoft and Netscape remain in talks with AOL about a potential licensing agreement.

Microsoft seeking to derail AOL talks with Netscape; at same time, Netscape said to try for an alliance with CompuServe Inc
Article Abstract:
Talks between America Online (AOL) and Netscape are interrupted by Microsoft's efforts to have the online service instead agree to license Microsoft's Internet software. Netscape responds to its competitor's overtures by attempting to also forge a licensing deal with CompuServe, an online service that presently offers Microsoft software. Under terms of Microsoft's proposed contract, AOL subscribers would gain access to the software vendor's Internet Explorer Web browser. Netscape's estimated 85% share of the Web browser market is under direct threat from increasingly aggressive marketing moves by Microsoft. Netscape's stocks continue their steady decline since Microsoft's announcement that it would offer a portion of its Internet software for free.
