America Online cuts fee to lure Prodigy users

America Online Inc cuts its prices in a candid bid to grab customers from Prodigy Services Co, the leader in the fast-growing information-services market. America Online currently has about a quarter of a million subscribers, who tie into the service via their personal computers. Because their pricing plans are so complex, services have tried to distinguish themselves on the basis of features. America Online will charge subscribers $9.95 per month for five hours of access-time to all services, plus $3.50 for each additional hour, down from $7.95 per month for two hours of access and $6 for each additional hour. Users of Prodigy pay $14.95 per month for unlimited access to many services, but beginning Jul 1, 1993, they will have to pay surcharges after spending two hours on some popular services. Prodigy has more than 2 million subscribers.

Prodigy Services, Times Mirror set computer venture

Times Mirror Co and Prodigy Services Co team up to offer enhanced services. A new computer information network is the result of the alliance, which is one in a series between home-computer service and media companies. The network enables Times Mirror readers to gain local computer-based information services and national Prodigy services. Prodigy customers have access to Times Mirror services as well. Same-day newspaper text, local computer bulletin boards and past articles are included in the expanded services. Other benefits, such as restaurant review and sports information, are also available. Prodigy competed with America Online Inc for the partnership with Times Mirror.
