An analysis of operational experience in the US/Mexico production sharing (maquiladora) program
Article Abstract:
An examination of practices and issues encountered by companies involved in US/Mexico production sharing or 'maquiladora' operations is presented. Information from 28 companies and 58 different facilities provides the basis for analysis and four general conclusions. It is found to be possible to transfer core manufacturing management programs with validity between American and Mexican socioeconomic environments. Assumptions generally accepted concerning organization and other factors in offshore manufacturing may need some adjustment in the maquiladora cases. A high level of organizational and management integration already exists between the US and Mexico, with implications for further economic integration of North America. Benefits can be gained through integrated operations planning and control.

Mixing static and dynamic flow estimates for due-date assignment
Article Abstract:
A new approach to flowtime prediction is offered, involving a single flowtime prediction model incorporating both static and dynamic estimates. Job flowtime prediction is seen as important for supporting customer satisfaction and for internal controls. The predictions obtained from the new model, which was found to give due-date performance improvements, are said to be more accurate for noisy shop conditions and do not involve loss of flowtime prediction precision. Implications for job shop management are suggested.
