Apple's cloners to get system upgrade, but may be denied future advances
Article Abstract:
Apple has agreed to allow cloners of its Macintosh computer to use Apple's newest operating system, the Mac OS 8. Umax Computer negotiated successfully to use the system. The pact includes Motorola Computer Group and Power Computing, the two other major cloning companies. The companies were unable to receive assurances that they would be allowed to use any future technology advances in Macintosh operating systems. The cloning companies are concern about the lack of leadership at Apple and Steve Jobs' position as advisor. Jobs is assumed to be behind the new hard-line stance taken by Apple's CFO Fred Anderson toward the cloners. Market share for cloners has declined substantially due in part to Apple's refusal to license its PowerBook laptop.

Apple plans direct sales over Internet
Article Abstract:
Apple will adopt a practice pioneered by Dell Computer and will begin selling built-to-order computers directly over the Internet. The plan was announced on Nov 10, 1997, by acting CEO Steve Jobs. Rumors had been circulating that Jobs would reveal a collaboration with Oracle Corp involving network computers (NC), but no such announcement was forthcoming. Jobs did, however, unveil a product line of high-performance desktop and notebook computers. The G3 series uses a PowerPC processor, capable of operating at speeds up to 266MHz, which was jointly developed by IBM and Motorola. G3 computers will be priced between $2,000 and $5,700.
