Apple Computer posts an 18 percent drop in profit for its fiscal fourth quarter
Article Abstract:
Apple profits drop 18 percent to net earnings of $81.2 million, or 67 cents a share, in the 4th qtr, the result of a successful but costly marketing strategy. The year previous, Apple earned $98.5 million, or 81 cents a share. Apple sales increased 11 percent from $1.35 billion to $1.51 billion, and unit sales jumped 50 percent as customers began to buy lower-priced Macintosh microcomputers. Apple lowered its prices in an effort to capture a larger share of the microcomputer market. Although the strategy is working in terms of increased sales, earnings are suffering because Apple has not cut costs fast enough to offset the lower prices. In the quarter ended Sep 27, 1991, gross profit margins were down from 51.8 to 43.4 percent compared with the year previous. Corporate restructuring lowers operating costs as a percentage of revenue from 42 to 35 percent.

Labs rely on computer models to predict changes in climate
Article Abstract:
Environmental scientists use computer models that are fed into supercomputers to forecast the earth's environmental future. Computer modelers use sophisticated equations and mathematical articulations to simulate the interaction of factors such as energy from the sun, ocean currents, composition of the atmosphere and fundamental laws of physics. The simulations are then used by supercomputers to calculate the temperature, air pressure and other atmospheric variables. The global circulation models (GCMs) are by far the most sophisticated. At peak operating times, scientists can use GCMs to produce almost a billion calculations per second. While most scientists presently use Cray Research Inc's Cray Research YM-P supercomputer to conduct the calculations, the new Cray Research C-90 system will be much faster, offering triple the YM-P's processing speed.
