Apple and Ellison seem ready to duel over control of ailing computer maker
Article Abstract:
Apple is taking defensive steps to ward off a possible takeover attempt by Larry Ellison, chmn and CEO of Oracle, the leader in the database software industry. Apple has turned to investment banking firm Goldman, Sachs, & Co., as Ellison approaches current and potential Apple investors and asks advice of other Silicon Valley executives. The possible takeover, in the wake of Apple's latest $708 million loss, focused on the issue of Apple CEO Gil Amelio's leadership and the direction the company is taking. Amelio insists that Apple is on the right track and not up for sale. Industry analysts believe that Ellison would need a 60% stake, costing $1.6 billion, to acquire Apple. He is expected to seek outside investors to reduce personal risk rather than having Oracle take over Apple. Ellison sees opportunities for Apple to produce network computers, rather than the high-end systems the company is currently depending on for its survival. Steve Jobs, a personal friend of Ellison, has disassociated himself from any acquisition attempts.
