Apple shares up on rumor of takeover
Article Abstract:
The price of Apple stock rose $3.125 to $42 in Nasdaq trading on Jan 6, 1995 based on rumors that the company was about to be taken over. The trade publication, 'Information Week' reports that Oracle Corp, Matsushita Electric Industrial Company and Philips Electronics N.V. were holding merger talks with Apple. A Philips spokesperson declared the rumors to be 'nonsense,' while representatives from Oracle and Matsushita did not have any comments about the rumor. Apple CEO and Pres Michael H. Spindler reports the company is not for sale, but industry analysts believe Apple is a good takeover target because it has key software technology that other software and hardware companies would like to use. Analysts also report the company is a prime merger candidate because its market share of the personal computer industry is just about 10 percent, while the market share of PCs using Microsoft-based applications and system software is 80 percent.

Senior Apple executives predicted the company would experience a normal second quarter slump in sales.
